Khaya offers many leisurely activities and great outings because we believe your stay in South Africa is not solely about your internship:activities-1

Beach Party
Twice a year (September and February) Khaya organizes a beach party for all the students and volunteers as well as the local people who like to meet the new people

Safari Game Park
Full day safaris to several game parks, such as Addo Elephant Park, Kragga Kamma Game Park or Seaview Lion Park. Lunch and cocktails are enjoyed in the park while we are searching for the wild animals. Sometimes we have a braai (BBQ) in the game park or we go to the beach for a great meal after a refreshing dive.

activities-3

Township tour
In order to explore South Africa’s diversity we organize a local guide who will take us on a tour, where we explore the culture and meet many people who live in the township. We will visit one or more shebeens (former illegal bars) where you can enjoy strong Sherries and dance with the locals. The community hall has been converted to a restaurant where we will enjoy a traditional meal and join in some African singing and dancing.

Wild Coast
The Wild Coast which is a 3½ hours drive from Port Elizabeth is one of South Africa’s unspoilt areas. We will stay in a beautiful place with the most spectacular beaches for a weekend. You can join in activities such as taking up surf lessons, driving quad bikes, go horse riding, or enjoy a game drive through a game park nearby. We will spend the evenings around the campfires or in the local bar where we party till the early hours of the morning.

Dolphin and whale watching cruises
South Africa is an awesome dolphin and whale watching destination. During their annual migration (April-November) you can spot these beautiful creatures with their newborn calves on a regular basis.

activities-22Hogsback
Only a few hours drive from PE lies the magical town Hogsback. This is a town where time seems to stand still and where the fairies might pop up and guide you on a hike through the impressive Amatola Mountains. Here you can explore the magical forests and their beautiful waterfalls. You can also take a drive in a 4×4, relax in the garden where the Samango monkeys are daily visitors or cool off in the swimming pool. You can end your day with sundowners in the world’s scariest tree house and then join everyone around the campfire or in the bar where the fun never stops!

Hike weekend
For the sporty people among us there is a 2 day hike which will take you through valleys and forests that guide you to an open chalet in the forest situated near a river. When we arrive at the chalets our luggage will be dropped off and it will be time to relax with a drink or cool off in the river. After a good braai and a good nights rest we will head back via another route. During this hike we will most probably see antelopes, warthogs, baboons, a cave with bushman paintings and the most stunning views.

Great Fish River
In luxurious thatched roof houses in a game reserve we will enjoy the awesome view of the Great Fish river and most probably come across hippos, rhinos, giraffes, and lots of other animals.

Snorkel with seals
You can swim between the seals and be surprised by their agility.
